Entry for January 27, 2008
The bath project looms...I went to the Habitat for Humanity ReStore and got a bunch of tile. Most of it is weird bumpy cream colored stuff. I wonder what I'll create with that! Soon, all the backboard will be installed and then I'll have to get busy breaking tiles for the surround. Yesterday, Kate and I went to the Julie Baker Gallery to see the "A Tree is Nice" show. There was quite a variety of mediums, from plain white cut paper assemblage to rusted panels with oils. Some pieces were quite large. I liked the rust paintings a lot. The rust tree image was created by overpainting the rusty panel with oil paint in all the places it wasn't a tree. At least I think it was done that way. I don't know how rust pieces hold up. I can just imagine one eventually dripping a rusty line down the wall. I suppose they're sealed somehow. The gallery doesn't have much display space for paintings, but it suits the short attention span crowd. Which is most everybody who looks at art. I'm just glad a gallery of this caliber exists in Nevada City at all.
