This wall portrait is of Dido, Queen of Carthage, a powerful woman in Greek
mythology. When ship-wrecked Aeneas ended up in her city, intervention of the gods
caused her to fall madly in love with him. Unfortunately, he had to leave to found
Rome. This so enraged Dido, she built a pyre of all his belongings, topped with his
sword, and as his ship sailed off into the sunset, lit the pyre, and flung herself on top
of the sword.
